Ellampeta sri venugopala swamy temple enclyclopedia

ELLAMPETA SRI VENUGOPALA SWAMY TEMPLE ENCYCLOPEDIA

Sri.Venugopala Swamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to god Krishna is located at Ellampeta village,  which is just 30 kms from Nandalur Mandal of Kadapa dist,A.P is another example of Vijayanagara architecture in Andhrapradesh. This temple was built in 1516 A.D in the period of great Chola king  Sri Krishnadevaraya.
            Original History:
Before the Telugu ganga dam project was conceived by Sri.N.T.Ramarao (Former chief Minister of Andhrapradesh) in 1986 to provide drinking water to Chennai city in Tamil Nadu, this temple complex was located in the village of Ellampeta at the bank of Cheyyeru river.
However, the Venugopala Swamy temple complex and 2 other temples namely Kenneshwara ( Ishwara) temple and Musilipetamma (A local deity) temple had to be abandoned by 1990. The dam was completed and all three temples were submerged.
Before the village submersion all the Idols & Vahanas are shifted to Sri.Kodanda Ramaswamy temple,Vontimitta, Kadapa dist in the year 1990. In the Year 2016 Sri.Kodanda Ramaswamy temple taken over by TTD from Endowment, all are shifted to Sri.Soumyanatha swamy temple,Nandalur, Kadapa dist.
The main idols of Venugopalaswamy temple :
Panchalogha Idols: 1.Venugopalaswamy (Lord Krishna playing on flute) 2.Rukmini 3.Satyabhama 4.Venna mudda krishna  5.Andal amman 6.Thirumungai Alvar 7.Anjanaya swamy 8.Checkra Parumal 9.Vedanti Sulkalu.
Panchalogha Vahanas: 1. Garuda  2.Hamsa 3.sesha  4.Hanumanth 5.Simha  6.vali.
The main idols of Kenneshwara temple :
Panchalogha Idols: 1. Lord Ishwara  2.Parvathy devi  3.Ganga mata.
Architecture:
The original temple complex was massive, with the area of around 3500.00 Sq.mts.
The Venugopalaswamy temple is know for its exquisite carvings and elegant architectural designs. The King Krishnadevaraya was a lover of art and architecture and the temples and monuments constructed during his reign are famous for their architectural designs.
The complex was a symmetrical building enclosed by two “Prakaras” and the outer gate (Mahadwara) had verandahs on both sides, flanked by the yagasala and kitchen.
The temple had a garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) a vestibule, a middle hall and a mukhya mantapa (main hall). This reflects Vijayanagara architecture.
Submersion and restoration:
When the Telugu ganga dam was conceived in 1986, the temple was condemned for submersion. In Year 1990 the entire village of Ellampeta was completely buried under water. However, the temple would resurface whenever the water levels in the reservoir dropped, typically during summer season. More than 30 years the temple lay under water.
In year 2012 (After 22 years) villagers are decided to conduct their tradition festival Sri.Venugopalaswamy Kalyanam in the month of May every year as per earlier ensters doing. After the formation of  Ellampeta Sri Venugopala swamy temple society in year 2015, gear up activities and conducting Sri vari kalyanam in a big way and took up the task of restoring the temple.
